In November 1993, Schoeni Art Gallery Ltd will organise an unprecedented exhibition entitled "Invitation to Infinity" which will showcase the works of an internationally renowned Russian Artist, Alexei Sundukov. Most of Sundukov's works are present in museums and private collections all over the world, but remain quite unknown to-the Hong Kong audience. It ta therefore with great pride that Schoeni Art Gallery invites the Hong Kong public to share the very unique vision of this artist who, with his distinctive style, delves into issues which have a direct bearing on all of our Uves: an investigation of politics, religion and man's sexuality.
Alexei Sundukov's solo exhibition will open on Tuesday, 16th November 19.93 and will continue through Tuesday, 3oth November 1993.
A major figure in contemporary Russian art, Sundukov carried out public commissions in the early 1980's as a monumental artist before deciding to concentrate on easel painting. The surface of his canvases and sculptures are teeming with minutely drawn human beings and objects, mainly in shades of grey and white. The artist's technique reflects his background in monumental painting and his choice of colours denotes the important influence of photography on his work. His hallucinatory images express the anomie and alienation of modern man in a world cramped fuller and fuller with objects of all kinds. This frantic universe is often juxtaposed with allusions to religious paintings and myths of Occidental history, perhaps in a nostalgic attempt to return to an age where tradition, religion and heroic acts were values which man could count on, and which have all but disappeared in our modern world.
